this is my first ever diesel.. Very sluggish on starting in the cold. Battery/earths, etc OK. How do you check glow plugs (all I know is the yellow heater light comes on and goes out after 5 seconds). Do they 'wear', get clogged, or what.
What is cost of replacements ?

thanks

Take them out one and connect them to a 12v battery charger.

Clip the top bit to the +ve and the body to the -ve, switch on the charger and if it's not glowing hot with a few seconds it's buggered.

If it blows up and you die, I will edit this post and deny all knowledge.  smile2

Does it turn over fairly quickly?

Generally Tdi's will start on the first or second turn, with or without heat.

Earth strap. Test it by connecting a jump lead to the -ve terminal at one end, and the engine block on the other. If it spins over ok then you need a new earth strap.

What he said, if you're not convinced then try another jump lead from the +ve to the top of one of the glow plugs, that will energise them all.  Just make sure the jaws of the lead don't touch the block  Roll Eyes

If it's sluggish turning over it has nothing to do with the glow plugs. They warm things up and should enable firing in the cold weather but aren't going to do anything about spinning the engine faster.
I would suggest your battery might not be as good as you think, or the thickened sludgy oil in the cold weather is causing issues. Try a second battery on jump leads and see if it spins over faster, you might find you don't even need the glowplugs.
On mine (15 yr old 300tdi) it's always been in the depths of winter when it suddenly barely wanted to turn over and I knew the battery was on it's way out. Leaving it on trickle charge overnight helped for the first start in a morning but getting a new battery was a proper fix. I had batteries checked and they were given the not great but should be OK opinion but for the money a new one is what I did.

TDI's dont strictly need glowplugs above -15 deg c unless fucked. Oil to heavey, fucked cables or starter.

True, I never bothered wiring up the glowplugs when I fitted the 200 to the 110 and it always starts well.

Mine has been a bit sluggish to turn over recently, but it has been when the temp. has been below -5C and I don't really bother with the glowplugs. I might give it a second or two at most before turning it over as I prefer to have it spinning rather than dragging juice out of the battery to theoretically warm things up a bit.
